Candidates Called on to Commit to Action on Sexual Violence
Laurel House calls on all state election candidates to commit to real, sustained action to prevent sexual harm and support victim-survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse.
“For too long, sexual violence and child sexual abuse haven’t been prioritised in political conversation,” said Laurel House CEO Kathryn Fordyce.
“We call on all candidates to show leadership and commit to taking meaningful steps to create a Tasmania where everyone is safe from sexual harm.”
Laurel House calls on all candidates to:
- Commit to a Future Free from Sexual Violence and Child Sexual Abuse
Candidates are urged to publicly commit to prioritising the safety of all Tasmanians and to fully implementing the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings. With the majority of the COI’s recommendations yet to be implemented, strong, committed leadership is critical. - Partner with Laurel House and Lived Experience to Build a System That Works
Laurel House calls on all candidates to commit to working in genuine partnership with victim-survivors, community services and organisations like Laurel House to create a system that is trauma-informed, inclusive and fit for purpose.
- Act on the Evidence to Drive Prevention, Reform and Culture Change
Laurel House urges candidates to commit to the solutions we know will work by applying an evidence-based approach to systemic reform, prevention strategies and cultural change to prevent, respond to and heal from sexual violence and child sexual abuse.
“This is an opportunity for all candidates to demonstrate their commitment to ending sexual violence in Tasmania by working with victim-survivors and specialist services to build a Tasmania free from sexual harm,” Ms Fordyce said.
