Primary Care FSV Support
Do you suspect a patient, or their children, is experiencing family or sexual violence? It is essential that you ask the question and help them take action.
The North and North West Tasmanian Sexual Assault Support Service, known as Laurel House, is a not-for-profit, community-based specialist sexual assault support service.
Our team provides sexual assault trauma counselling, support, education and training. We provide an inclusive, holistic service that addresses sexual inequalities and abuses by advocating for individual and community change.
Every week, on average, a Tasmanian primary care practice will see at least five (5) patients who are currently experiencing family and sexual violence, including child sexual abuse.
This new service helps doctors connect them with support.
The service is free, integrated and delivered by Tasmania’s specialist family and sexual violence services:
- Engender Equality
- SASS
- Laurel House
PCFSVS is funded by Primary Health Tasmania.
Primary Care FSV (PCFSV) Support is available to help General Practices (GPs) or Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) to:
- Spot the signs of family and sexual violence (including child sexual abuse)
- Ask the right questions about FSV
- Validate disclosures of FSV
- Assess FSV patient risk
- Document FSV to meet legal requirements and practice standards
- Act to prevent harm, ensure patient safety, and provide ongoing care – including intensive assistance from PCFSV support to ‘close the referral loop’ for patients experiencing FSV.
