Statement re ABC News story: Domestic violence comments to Bettina Arndt puts UTAS lecturer in spotlight
At Laurel House we are clear and unequivocal:
We believe victim-survivors.
We provide services to people of all genders, cultures and backgrounds.
We deliver evidence-based education and support services with the aim of preventing and responding to sexual harm in our communities.
Laurel House vehemently rejects the views expressed by the host of the #MENtoo YouTube channel and the interviewee referred to in the ABC story.
As outlined in the ABC story, the views expressed on the YouTube channel are not supported by evidence and are condemned by specialist legal and support services, the state’s peak body for the family and sexual violence sector (the TFSVA) and by Tasmania Police. Laurel House stands in solidarity and fierce agreement with our colleagues and partners.
Attempts to discredit the voices and experiences of victim-survivors, who are disproportionately women and girls, serve only to perpetuate family and sexual violence in our communities.
We are deeply committed to the belief that everyone has the right to live free from the violence of child sexual abuse, sexual assault and sexual harassment and remain focused on our work to prevent and respond to sexual violence.
